Insights seminar: Eco-driving and traction energy management
Rail Partners and the University of Birmingham came together to educate members on the benefits of eco-driving and traction energy management. The interactive workshop and discussion session was largely aimed at the train driver management, and environment and sustainability manager community and built on the Rail Partners eco driving and traction energy management guidance note published earlier this year.
The speakers explained how to reap the benefits of eco-driving by describing what it is about a train journey profile that drives energy consumption for either diesel or electric trains, and presenting case studies where train operators have successfully measured, analysed and then, reduced train energy consumption. Attendees also learned about how to implement eco-driving, including how in cab technology and lineside signage can support train drivers in reducing energy consumption.
